Why I’m Giving Up Alcohol, Mostly!

Why I'm Giving Up Alcohol

So extreme huh? Well, not totally.

You see I’ve never really had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol but as I get older I’ve grown into realizing it’s not the best substance for me.

Before I get into why I’m quitting it, kinda, I’ll let you in as to why I enjoy it. See, I’m a very social person. I love being out, having a good time and well those are really the only reasons I could come up with as I brainstormed for this post. Yes, I do love a good margarita and it tastes so good! But while reflecting on the topic of alcohol I really couldn’t find a concrete reason to really consume it.

Which brings me to my reasons that I’m choosing to refrain from it.

I DON’T NEED IT TO BE SOCIAL

This one’s no secret. I’m a pretty social person. I know for many people alcohol is almost like social liquid courage. I think it’s good for those that get nervous around others to have a drink to loosen the tension. However, I don’t really need alcohol to feel safe holding or starting a conversation so this one is a given.

IT SLOWS DOWN MY METABOLISM & OTHER HEALTH REASONS

Not only does alcohol slow down our metabolism, it increases blood pressure and can weaken the heart muscle just to name a few side effects. Of course drinking sporadically or every once in a while will not have the same toll on our bodies but as I stated earlier, I don’t have a reason to counter this with.

I HATE THE ANXIETY IT CAUSES ME

I’m not sure if I’m the only one, but oh my gosh I get anxiety almost always after drinking. I don’t usually get anxious so when I experience it along with restlessness it always stems from a night of drinking. Most times it isn’t even from excessive consumption but even a normal night of being out or consuming it will have me feeling off the next morning. I despise the feeling with a passion and this alone is a good enough reason for me to not consume it at all.

I’M MORE PRODUCTIVE & IN BALANCE WHEN I DON’T DRINK

Being such a social butterfly it’s very easy for me to suggest a night out with a friend to meet up over drinks. I like being around people due to being mostly an extrovert so I feel comfortable in that setting. However, it’s much easier for me to be unproductive and procrastinate when I make a habit out of it. With all the goals I’ve set for myself and the work it requires I know getting out of that comfort zone and into true focus mode is what will help me achieve what I’m striving for. I also gain back that day after where I’m not at my best.

IT SAVES ME MONEY

No brainer, right? There’s nothing wrong with treating yourself in the areas you desire but after deciding to give up alcohol I couldn’t help but throw this one in there because everything, no matter how big or small, always adds up! Using the money towards my business or saving it just sounds a lot better to me!

I STILL CAN’T THINK OF A GOOD ENOUGH REASON TO CONSUME IT, STILL

Like I said, after brainstorming while writing this post I couldn’t think of one good enough reason to continue to drink. Other than margaritas and other beverages tasting good but so did meat for most of my life and well, I gave that up with no issue due to wanting to better my health.

As far as adding the word mostly in the title of this post, it’s because I do want to give myself the space to choose to drink at certain moments or occasions. For instance a glass of champagne to celebrate a special event or a glass of wine ever so often if the time seems fitting for me. Other than that I’ve made up my mind to weed out certain habits or substances that do not contribute to my growth or health.

In no ways am I telling you that you need to stop drinking, on the contrary it may not be such an issue on your life or productivity.

I am however, asking if there is something you need to give up or cut out in order to better yourself and your life? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
